In keeping with the practice of the Holy See that each country observe a Solemnity of Mary, the USCCB chose to observe the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a holy day of obligation since under this title Mary is the Patroness of the U.S.A.
